As a teenager navigating high school, I've come to realize that the portrayal of this experience on TV is often far from reality. High school is a complex, multifaceted experience that can't be summarized in a single trope or storyline. In this post, I'll be sharing some of the unspoken truths of high school based on my own experiences, in the hopes of providing a more authentic perspective.
WHAT NO-ONE WILL TELL YOU
Come on, let's be honest! at some point well all thought that our high school experience will be just like "High School Musical" because pop culture has created a certain image of high school, often portrayed as a fun, musical-filled experience where everyone breaks out into perfectly choreographed songs and dances. When in reality it is VERY far from this idealized portrayal. In many ways, the experience of high school can be more akin to Will Smith's 'The Pursuit of Happyness,' where you face obstacles and challenges that require determination, resilience, and perseverance to overcome.
BEING POPULAR IS A MUST
I get it ok, at some point all I wanted was to be popular and to be seen, I wanted to be "that girl" and have a bunch of friends and I honestly thought that it's all that mattered but truthfully, it's not and I learned that the hard way. You don't have to be popular and have a bunch of unnecessary friends for you to enjoy your high school years, you'll end up attracting the wrong crowd and, in some cases, you'll even lose yourself! POPULARITY AND FRIENDSHIPS ARE NOT EVERYTHING!
BEING MEAN IS COOL
-Absolutely Not! There is nothing wrong with showing kindness to your peers and those around you! If anything, treating everyone with respect and kindness is cool.
TEACHERS ARE ETREMELY STRICT
We've all heard terrifying stories from kids in the older grade warning us about certain teachers that are ridiculously strict and how we should never look or breathe in their direction when we see them. CRAZY!!! not all teachers are Miss Trunchbull from Matilda, strict. Remember that your teachers want what's best for you.
BEAUTY IS EVERYTHING
In high school, it’s important to remember that being pretty or hot is not everything. While physical appearance may seem significant, it won’t guarantee success in getting into college, landing your dream job, or affording your dream car. Beauty fades over time, but knowledge and skills are timeless. Focusing on personal development, education, and building a strong character will have a lasting impact on your future success.
